Co-Chairs of President's Council for Sustainable Development to Headline NCSE Conference
Ray Anderson and Jonathan Lash, co-chairs of the former President's Council on Sustainable Development, will be plenary lecturers at an upcoming conference sponsored by the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE). The 3rd National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment, "Education for a Sustainable and Secure Future," will be held January 30-31, 2003, in Washington, DC.
Mr. Anderson is Chairman and CEO of Interface Flooring Systems, Inc., one of the world's largest commercial interior furnishings companies, which he founded in 1973. He has embarked on a mission to make Interface a sustainable corporation by leading a worldwide war on waste and pioneering technological changes for sustainable industry. In 1996, Mikhail Gorbachev presented Anderson with the inaugural Millennium Award from Global Green.
Mr. Lash has been President of the World Resources Institute (WRI) since 1993. Before joining WRI, Mr. Lash served as Vermont's Commissioner of Environmental Conservation, headed the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, and directed the environmental law and policy program of the Vermont Law School. He also co-chaired the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development's High-Level Advisory Group on Environment.

Dr. Rita Colwell, Director of the National Science Foundation, who will present the 3rd annual John H. Chafee Memorial Lecture on Science and the Environment Former Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day and a global leader in environmental and sustainability education, who will receive the NCSE Lifetime Achievement Award Congressman Vernon Ehlers (MI), Chair of the House of Representatives Science Committee's environment subcommittee, who will receive the NCSE Congressional Leadership Award.
At the conference, leading scientists, educators and policymakers from around the world will develop recommendations for the United States and for the upcoming UN Decade of Education for Sustainability (2005-2015). The recommendations will be transmitted in an action-oriented report produced by the NCSE following the conference.
