REGISTER NOW for the 3rd National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment: Education for a Sustainable and Secure Future. More than 500 scientists, educators, policymakers, business people, activists, journalists and others have already registered for the 3rd National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment on January 30-31 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC. Participants will explore the linkages between environmental protection and national security and develop an agenda for science-based environmental and sustainability education. PLENARY SPEAKERS. Co-chairs of the former President's Council on Sustainable Development Jonathan Lash, President of the World Resources Institute, and Ray Anderson, Chairman of Interface Flooring Systems, will present plenary lectures. NSF Director Rita Colwell will present the third John H. Chafee Memorial Lecture on Science and the Environment.
ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON SUSTAINABILITY AND SECURITY. Ray Suarez from the NewsHour will moderate a diverse panel including Lynn Scarlett, Assistant Secretary of the Interior; Jan Pronk, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the UN on Sustainable Development and former Minister of the Environment of the Netherlands; Timothy Keeny, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce; Denis Hayes, President of the Bullitt Foundation; Dee Allsop, CEO of Wirthlin Worldwide; David Orr, Professor at Oberlin College; and Charles Groat, Director of the U.S. Geological Survey.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EDUCATION FOR A SUSTAINABLE AND SECURE FUTURE. Conference participants will meet in 21 breakout sessions to develop recommendations for educational reform for the U.S. and for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainability. They will address topics such as sustainability and security curricula for K-12 and undergraduates, community education, and planetary health. Leading education policymakers will discuss how to implement the recommendations in a panel moderated by Thomas Lovejoy, President of the Heinz Center, with Judith Ramaley, National Science Foundation Assistant Director; Paul Gilman, EPA Assistant Administrator; Eugene Hickok, Under Secretary of the Department of Education, Bruce Alberts, President of the National Academy of Sciences; and Shirley Malcom, Director of Education and Human Resources at the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
PUBLIC COMMUNICATION ROUNDTABLE. A panel on how to present sustainability concepts to the public will open with the presentation of the NCSE Lifetime Achievement Award to former U.S. Senator and Wisconsin Governor Gaylord Nelson, who founded Earth Day in 1970. Discussants will include Tom Toles, Washington Post; Brian Healy, CBS News; Tom Donlan, Barron’s; Julissa Marenco, Telemundo; and Tony Pigott, CEO of J. Walter Thompson.
