Register Now for NCSE Conference: Water for a Sustainable and Secure Future

The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) invites you to participate in a unique conference to develop science-based strategies for achieving water sustainability.  NCSE's 4th National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment: Water for a Sustainable and Secure Future will be held on January 29-30, 2004 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC

The conference will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders—both specialists and non-specialists in water resources—united by their common concern over issues of water sustainability.  Leading scientists, policy makers, government officials, business executives, and educators will explore how science can help achieve sustainable relationships among water, people, and the environment.

A limited number of complimentary registrations are available to members of the NCSE University Affiliates Program.   See the conference registration page at or call 202-530-5810 for details.

The opening keynote address will be delivered by William K. Reilly, who will draw upon his experience as President and CEO of Aqua International Partners, Chairman of the World Wildlife Fund, and Former Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The 4th Annual John H. Chafee Memorial Lecture on Science and the Environment will be delivered by Jared Diamond of the University of California at Los Angeles, author of the national bestseller Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies and recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Medal of Science.

Participants in roundtable discussions and other plenary sessions include:

  • Mohamed El-Ashry, CEO and Chairman Emeritus of the Global Environment Facility
  • Bruce Babbitt, Former Secretary of the Interior; Former Governor of Arizona
  • Gen. Gerald Galloway, Vice President of Titan Corp; Chair of the National Water Policy Dialogue
  • Peter Gleick, President of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security
  • Robert Hirsch, Associate Director for Water, U.S. Geological Survey
  • Jeremy Pelczer, President of American Water; Vice Chairman of Thames Water
  • Maurice Strong, Under Secretary General of the United Nations; Secretary-General of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio
  • Jane Valentine, President of the American Water Resources Association

All conferees will take part in one of 17 interactive breakout sessions and one of four symposia, where they will discuss specific topics and generate strategies to address some of the diverse and complex issues that surround water sustainability.  Active participation and lively discussion are encouraged in these sessions.  A poster session will enable participants to share their research on topics at the interface between water science and water policy.  The conference will include an exhibition featuring innovative water programs, products and technologies.

The conference themes, which are reflected in the symposia and breakout sessions, are listed below:

  1. Sustainable Water Management and Institutions.  How can we make watershed management work?  How can we better align water policy with water science?
  2. Water Quality and Sanitation.  Have we turned the corner on water pollution?  How safe is our water?  How should priorities be set, and who should set them?
  3. Water Technologies.  How can technology help meet U.S. and international water supply and sanitation needs?  How can we bring new water technologies to the marketplace?
  4. Estuaries and Coastal Resources.  How can we manage estuaries and coastal resources more comprehensively?

A report containing strategies developed at the conference will be widely publicized and presented at briefings to the U.S. Congress, federal, state and local governments, educational institutions, and the general public.
