Chafee Memorial Lecture at the 4th National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment. He will speak on Lessons from Environmental Collapses of Past Societies. Over 500 scientists, policymakers, business people and journalists have already pre-registered for the conference on Water for a Sustainable and Secure Future, which will be held on January 29-30 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The last day to register online will be January 25. We recommend advance online pre-registration in order to avoid lines at on-site registration. This unique conference will gather a diverse group of stakeholders—both specialists and non-specialists in water resources—to develop science-based strategies for achieving water sustainability.
William K. Reilly will deliver the opening address, which will integrate his perspectives as President and CEO of Aqua International Partners, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the World Wildlife Fund, and Former Administrator of the U.S. EPA. Klaus Toepfer, Executive Director of the U.N. Environment Programme, will give the second plenary address.
Ambassador Richard Benedick, President of the National Council for Science and the Environment, will moderate a panel discussion on Sustainable Water Use: Overcoming Barriers to Change. The panel will feature Bruce Babbitt, former Governor of Arizona and former Secretary of the Interior, Mohamed El-Ashry, CEO and Chairman Emeritus of the World Bank's Global Environment Facility, and Barbara Sheen Todd, elected member of the Board of Commissioners, Pinellas County, Florida, and Past President of the National Association of Counties.
Other featured speakers include Gen. Gerald Galloway, Vice President of Titan Corp and Chair of the National Water Policy Dialog; Peter Gleick, President of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security; Robert Glennon, Professor of Law and Public Policy at the University of Arizona and author of Water Follies; Benjamin Grumbles, Acting Assistant Administrator for Water at EPA; Robert Hirsch, Associate Director for Water of the U.S. Geological Survey; Jeremy Pelczer, President of American Water and Deputy CEO of Thames Water; and Jane Valentine, President of the American Water Resources Association.
All conferees will take part in one of 17 interactive breakout sessions and one of four symposia, where they will discuss specific topics and generate strategies to address some of the diverse and complex issues that surround water sustainability. These recommendations will be published and publicized in briefings to national, state and local policymakers.
