Mohamed El-Ashry Joins NCSE Board of Directors

 

2004 Conference-  Mohamed El-AshryDr. Mohamed El-Ashry, Chairman and CEO emeritus of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has joined the Board of Directors of the National Council for Science and the Environment.  

Under Dr. El-Ashry’s leadership from 1991 to 2003, GEF grew from a pilot program with less than 30 members to the largest single source of funding for the global environment with 173 member countries.  During his tenure as Chairman and CEO emeritus, the Global Environment Facility allocated $4 billion in grants and leveraged $12 billion in additional financing for the environment, growing to include more than 1,000 projects in over 140 countries.  

Prior to coming to GEF, Dr. El-Ashry was the Chief Environmental Advisor to the President and Director of the Environment Department of the World Bank.  Dr. El-Ashry joined the World Bank, after serving as Senior Vice President of the World Resources Institute (WRI) and as Director of Environmental Quality with the Tennessee Valley Authority.  

Dr. El-Ashry received his B.S. degree with honors in 1959 from Cairo University and Ph.D. degree in geology in 1966 from the University of Illinois.  He has received numerous international awards and honors and is the author of three books and more than 200 papers.

Dr. El-Ashry is a fellow of the Geological Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  He is a member of the Third World and African Academies of Science.  

As a plenary speaker at NCSE’s 4th National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment, Dr. El-Ashry addressed the need for water policy reform during his talk.
